Armin Szegedi

Armin Szegedi, M.D., Ph.D., is Vice President, Global Clinical Research CNS, for Schering Research Institute. He assumed this position in 2008, directing and coordinating clinical research in the therapeutic area of CNS (central nervous system), including psychiatry, neurology, anesthesia and analgesia, with the goal of successfully developing innovative products from the current rich CNS pipeline at Schering Plough Research Institute. The newly formed clinical research group operates on a global level with principal clinical research activities directed from Kenilworth and Roseland, New Jersey, and Oss (The Netherlands). Prior to that, Dr. Szegedi served as the Executive Director Clinical Projects Neuroscience within the Global Clinical Development Department at Organon, being responsible for the scientifically rigorous development of new psychotropic drug treatments in various areas of Neuroscience.

Throughout his career, Dr. Szegedi has focused his academic research on issues in psychopharmacology, especially with regard to depression, schizophrenia and alcohol-related disorders. He has been involved in numerous clinical trials evaluating new pharmacological agents, and has published numerous articles in high-ranked scientific journals.

In the field of alcoholism research, Dr. Szegedi has authored papers on biological markers in alcohol related disorders and served as a coordinating investigator in a project aimed at evaluating the marker properties of the G-protein- adenylyl cyclase-system in lymphocytes of alcohol-dependent patients. Moreover, he has been a coordinating investigator in a large multi-center trial in Germany comparing the effects of a combination treatment with a serotonergic drug (nefazodone) and cognitive-behavioral treatment in the relapse prevention of alcohol dependent men (NeVeR-Project). He has initiated projects in the field of psychiatric genetics, from which several publications in collaboration with national partners have resulted in highly respected journals.

The author of numerous abstracts, Dr. Szegedi has delivered oral presentations at national and international congresses, and has several original publications in peer-reviewed journals. He co-authored the German standard textbook of psychopharmacology, and has delivered a number of CME-credited presentations, seminars, work-shops, and educational courses on different topics in psychopharmacology. As an academic lecturer, he teaches medical students each semester in clinical psychiatry.
